MSHA Training

Do I need Part 46 or Part 48?

Mine Safety training is covered by two training requirements in 30 CFR, Part 46 and Part 48.

·        Part 46 applies to surface mines, including sand, clay, limestone, cement, marble, gravel, and granite.

·        Part 48 applies to all underground mines and other surface mines that are not included in Part 46.

The most crucial difference between Parts 46 and 48 is the location of the mine -- generally speaking, above-ground (Part 46) vs. underground (Part 48) mines. It is important to note, however, that the two parts also differentiate between the materials being mined: non-metals (Part 46) vs. metals (Part 48).

Phelps Safety offers New Miner Training and Annual Refreshers for Parts 46 and 48.

Part 46
New Miner Training

MSHA Part 46 regulations require that New Miners complete a minimum of 24 hours of training within their first 90 days of employment, 4 hours of which must be completed prior to beginning work at the mine.

This Part 46 New Miner Training course has been designed and approved by MSHA to satisfy the regulatory requirements for new miners, first-time workers, contractors, and field representatives at most surface mines, including sand, gravel, and surface limestone, and will provide everything you need to start working at a Part 46 mine.

Part 46 Refresher

MSHA also requires experienced miners, supervisors, and independent contractors who have completed Part 46 New Miner training to have an additional 8 hours of refresher training each year.

This Part 46 Refresher training course satisfies that requirement and has been designed and approved by MSHA. Topics covered include:

·        Introduction to MSHA

·        Introduction to the 1977 Mine Act/Miners Rights and Responsibilities

·        Hazard Communication

Part 48
New Miner Training

MSHA Part 48 regulations require that New Miners at underground mines and all other surface mines that are not included in Part 46 complete a minimum of 24 hours of training, all of which must be completed prior to beginning work at the mine.

This Part 48 New Miner Training course has been designed and approved by MSHA to satisfy the regulatory requirements for new miners, first-time workers, contractors, and field representatives and will provide everything you need to start working at a Part 48 mine.

Part 48 Refresher

MSHA also requires experienced miners, supervisors, and independent contractors who have completed Part 48 New Miner training to have an additional 8 hours of refresher training each year.

This Part 48 Refresher training course satisfies that requirement and has been designed and approved by MSHA. Topics covered include:
